What is a Book Break?

Book Breaks offer carers an opportunity to meet each other in small friendly groups, have a cup of tea and enjoy stories and poems together with the support of a trained volunteer group leader.

Who leads the Book Breaks?

They are led by a volunteer who is trained as a shared reading group leader through the Reader Organisation (www.thereader.org.uk for more information). The group leader will provide all of the books and poems and enable everybody in the group to take part in whatever way they wish to.

What happens in a group?

Carers are encouraged just to relax and listen whilst our trained group leaders read aloud from old and new stories and poems. They can join in by also reading aloud or take part in discussion and recollections or they can just sit and listen.

Do you have to read aloud?

There is no pressure for anyone to read or even speak because simply listening to the literature and the other group members can be rewarding.
