I feel part of something and am so much happier

Grow Westbank is our community allotment project.  Our project coordinator and volunteers took an un-inspiring plot of land at Westbank and have turned it into a vibrant community allotment and garden.

A lot of hard work went into developing the project, which involved volunteers, young and old, who built a key-hole garden, erected a polytunnel and summer house, and started to grow seedlings which were planted throughout the year.  The allotment has been flowering and providing produce since it began in 2014.

We’ve successfully grown an assortment of produce throughout the year including salad leaves, mangetout peas, broad beans, raspberries, strawberries, 10 foot sunflowers, beetroot, turnips, runner beans, courgettes, onions, carrot, sweetcorn, pumpkins and potatoes.

Lots of the produce has been served up in our Seedlings community café in delicious salads and other goodies, and some has gone to the day centre kitchen.

Thanks to everyone who has been involved– it has been really good fun and very rewarding.

Westbank have a large community allotment with a wonderful view at Barnfield in Crediton.

With the help of two lead volunteers we have been preparing the site and now need to expand the volunteering team to help us take it from a blank canvas to a vibrant community allotment.

Volunteers help with all aspects of growing food on site which includes: sowing seeds, bringing on plants, weeding, watering, harvesting etc. as well as supporting others within the community to take part. There will be plenty of support for people who are new to growing their own, but experienced gardeners are very welcome too.

We are expanding this project to include growing and learning sessions on a regular basis. Our volunteers can be found at the allotment every Wednesday morning 10am-12 midday.
