Cook and chat is a project where clients are referred to us who may need a bit of support in the kitchen. Clients have been referred to us for a whole host of reasons, examples being:

  • a young single parent wanted a bit of help to prepare fresh, healthy food on a budget for him and his young family
  • a lady finds herself alone following the death of her partner, and is not eating well. She wanted to build her confidence and get back to cooking for one
  • a gentleman  has never done much cooking, but following his wife’s ill health, he now has to and wanted to learn some basic skills to make food more interesting and tasty!

Volunteers will visit clients on a regular basis (e.g. weekly or fortnightly) in their own home, and support them to cook a healthy meal. The aim of the project is to improve the social, mental and physical wellbeing of people in the community who may lack confidence in cooking skills, feel isolated or be going through a tough time.

For this position, there may be a delay between applying and being placed. We take great effort and care to match people appropriately and sometimes this takes some time. Several home visits take place before the match is set up, and both parties are happy and confident to commence the match. Food hygiene training will be provided.
