We are looking to recruit volunteers who love cooking and understand what it's like to prepare food for a growing family. Let's Cook for Kids is a new scheme being developed as part of the Healthy Neighbourhoods project. Volunteers support approximately 8 participants to cook healthy food for weaning babies, toddlers and young children as part of a small volunteer team.

The aim of the project is to improve the health and social well-being of parents in the community who may lack confidence in their cooking skills, are weaning their babies or would like guidance on cooking healthy tasty food for their family and will benefit from being part of a social group all learning cooking skills together. Young children also participate in learning to cook and everyone eats lunch together afterwards.

What is not involved

Intense commitment; these are likely to be no more than fortnightly sessions and a time limit may be appropriate for some opportunities

What is involved

Deciding together with your team the recipes to cook at regular sessions and a small amount of admin registering participants at their first session. 

Qualities and skills required

  • Knowledge of healthy eating and food hygiene principles particularly weaning and cooking for a family. Food hygiene training provided as part of the role.
  • Ability to encourage and enable other people as part of a small team.
  • Empathy and understanding about being a young parent.
  • Love of children.
  • Honest and trustworthy.
  • Patient and reliable.
  • Respectful and flexible

All agreed expenses are reimbursed including travel.
