For many people who have a short or longer term health condition a trip to the super market or local shops becomes an impossible task, particularly for those who don’t have family or friends who are able to help. Although there are many organisations which provide a home meal delivery service, they unfortunately can’t provide the solution for all shopping needs.

Our Shopping Friend Volunteers help by either taking a person shopping or to do the shopping on the persons behalf on a weekly basis.

What’s required …

Pledge – Shopping Friends offers flexible volunteering opportunities:

  •  ‘As and When’ to support people living in your local community who have either been discharged from hospital or have a short term illness and need support with a ‘One off Shop’ to help them with their immediate shopping needs – this could be as straight forward as collecting a prescription.
  •  ‘Short Term’ to help people who are recovering from an operation or illness – for example a hip replacement – this is usually for a period of up to 8 weeks.
  •  ‘Longer Term’ – To provide regular weekly support by taking someone shopping or to do their shopping for them if they are housebound on a regular weekly basis.

Qualities and skills – Our Shopping Friend Volunteers will need to be patient and understanding, be reliable and discreet. And of course to like shopping!

Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) – this role will require volunteers to complete a DBS check

Training and support - All volunteers will receive induction training, which covers information on issues such as confidentiality, detailed information about the role of a Shopping Friends Volunteer and the support you will receive from the staff team to help  you in your role.

Expenses - You will be reimbursed for all agreed out of pocket travel costs
