Description of activity:

Providing transport to medical appointments with our volunteer drivers.

Legal Requirements and Guidance for Reference:

COVID-19 – We have conducted a risk assessment for these classes to produce this Safe System of Work, we have referred to the following sources:

This allows the volunteer department to use its volunteer drivers to drive people to their much needed medical appointments.

1. All users / drivers are advised of the following Covid 19 precautions:

· Drivers are to wear a suitable well fitted face mask which should be either single use or single session use and then discarded and NOT subject to continued use. They should be of the following standard. BS EN 14683 (Type II)

· Passengers are to wear an appropriate face covering at all times when using the minibus covering nose and mouth.

· Drivers and users to ensure good hygiene before and after each drive, ie washing hands with hot water and soap or use of sanitiser.

· Drivers will be asked to only transport one patient or two from the same household.

· Drivers will only assist users into the car where absolutely necessary and disposable gloves / face masks will be worn.

· We will not transport anyone who is displaying symptoms of COVID 19: new continuous cough / high temperature or anyone experiencing loss of smell / taste.

· Drivers will not drive if they are displaying symptoms of COVID 19.

· Drivers will wipe down with antibacterial wipes all contact points of their car (ie door / grab handles, seat belts etc.) between each user journey.

· Advised to maintain 2 metres social distancing where possible when attending appointments

2. All drivers are advised of the following:

· Drivers must have completed the “driver pack” available from the volunteering department at Westbank

· Drivers to ensure their car is in a roadworthy condition at all times

· Refuelling should take place without any passengers on board(except in an emergency)

· Drivers to take a mobile phone with them (if possible) and should only be used when the car is stationery and the engine is off.

· Drivers to have a supply of donation envelopes and should claim out of pocket expenses on a monthly basis

3. Transporting oxygen precautions for driver and service user:

BASIC Oxygen safety

· Do not smoke

· Keep cylinders away from naked flames

· Keep away from heat and direct sunlight

· Do not use if any obvious signs of leakage (i.e. hissing sound)

· Turn it off – turn off cylinder when not in use

TRANSPORTING Oxygen cylinders

· Always display a warning sign in the back (off side rear window) when carrying oxygen / remove when not

· Drivers to Inform relevant insurance company that you are carrying oxygen on behalf of a service user

· Ensure cylinders are safely secured in the boot of the vehicle, behind the front seats or on the back seat with a secure fastening.

· NEVER transport cylinders in the front passenger seat

· NEVER keep stored in a a vehicle during warm / hot temperatures

· Leave a window open to allow for ventilation

· NEVER Use oxygen in a fuel station and NEVER smoke when transporting / using oxygen in the car
