Rose, from Exeter regularly attends one of Westbank’s Health Walks close to where she lives and goes along most weeks. Rose says, “I speak for myself and others when I say our walking group is more than just exercise—it is a lifeline for many”.

“Beyond physical activity, it provides invaluable emotional support. This is particularly significant for individuals experiencing loneliness or isolation, as the group provides a much-needed opportunity for companionship in a structured and encouraging setting. For many, it has become a place to build friendships while also making strides toward a healthier lifestyle.

Our group is led by a volunteer Health Walks leader, who, with her caring, friendly, and supportive approach, offers a warm, welcoming space for members. Her commitment to building a community that supports well-being, inclusivity, and companionship has made an extraordinary impact, and she takes special care to ensure that each member feels valued.  This often involves tailoring our walking routes and providing extra support where needed, empowering everyone to join in, regardless of physical limitations. This inclusivity not only increases accessibility but also encourages a sense of belonging.

The positive influence of Westbank’s Health Walks on the community is profound. They go beyond fitness, offering a place where members feel heard, supported, and appreciated. The programme has now been running for an incredible 21 years. I can’t imagine how many people it has helped during that time, contributing not only to the physical health of participants but also to their emotional well-being, creating a genuinely caring environment that transforms lives.

Beyond the walks, volunteer Health Walk leaders often go the extra mile, organising seasonal picnics and a special Christmas meal, which further strengthen bonds within the group and provide joyful gatherings throughout the year”.
